On Nov. 1, 2007 an injured stray dog, Colton , was dropped off at the Isabella County Animal Shelter. He had a leg injury that looked like it may have been caused by a snare hunting trap, which is sometimes used as an alternative to guns. Colton was in need of a surgery to amputate his injured leg. The problem was finding money for the surgery. The cost to amputate Colton 's leg was between $1,200 and $1,500. The county did not have the funds for this type of surgery.

Colton attracted the hearts, and wallets, of many Isabella County citizens. An estimated $4,500 was donated to The Humane Animal Treatment Society, more than enough to fix his leg. Not only was Colton able to have his surgery performed, but the extra money would go into a permanent fund to help other injured animals in the future. "The Colton Fund for Special Needs Animals" now had its first check.
