HATS Of CMU Spay Day 2008

Despite the best efforts of shelters everywhere, there are still too many pets and not enough loving, responsible homes. The cost of pet overpopulation is staggering with more than $1 billion per year spent to provide community animal control services and care for homeless animals.

Those sobering statistics are the impetus behind Spay Day USA, an annual event when hundreds of community organizations coast to coast participate in activities that make it easier for people to get their pets spayed or neutered.

Members of HATS of Central Michigan University participated in 2008 Spay Day USA by having an information table at the CMU Park Library on February 26th. They provided information on the benefits of spaying and neutering and on the problem of pet overpopulation. Free wrist bands were available to anyone that stopped by.

Students participated in a questionnaire to win a tshirt. Many thanks to the members of the HATS of CMU, student volunteers and to all of the students who participated in 2008 Spay Day USA.

2006 Holiday Open House

Friends and families came to the Isabella County Shelter for the 2006 Holiday Open House. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful holiday music provided by the Heritage Flute Choir. There were tasty snacks to munch while visiting with other animal lovers. We even had a visit from 2 'puppy mill' dogs who were adopted last year that have found wonderful, happy homes.

There were several people looking at the animals that were available for adoption. Four 4 dogs and 6 cats were adopted that afternoon and went home with their new families.

Many thanks to everyone for their donations, to all of the crafters, to the volunteers for their hard work, and to all of the friends who helped make this a very happy holiday season. A very special 'thank you' to the Heritage Flute Choir for the wonderful music that helped make this a festive holiday.

Hold Cocoa Fundraiser February 7th

Stephanie Dueweke, President of the Student Chapter of HATS of Central Michigan University and Amy Lemieux held a hot cocoa fundraiser on a frigid Tuesday morning. Despite the cold weather there was a good turn out and they made over $71 which will help the student chapter put on their charity dinner, "Dinner for Paws & Claws", in April. The dinner has raised funds in the past to build a fenced in area for the dogs at the shelter and has provided funds for vaccinations for the animals.
