Last week, our media intern started her media internship with us!
Meet Draya- a graduating Central Michigan University student studying Journalism and Creative Writing. While at CMU, she discovered a love for volunteering thanks to the Volunteer Center on CMU’s campus. One of the Friday Alternative Break volunteer experiences that she participated in during the 2023-2024 school year was Park Pals at HATS.
Immediately upon bringing the dog she walked, Fudge, back to HATS she was filling out the volunteer application. In the Fall of 2024, she became a weekly feline socialization volunteer.
“Mondays were by-far my favorite day of the week that semester,” Draya shared. “I had never been a cat person because I was vastly more exposed to dogs my whole life, but I instantly fell in love with my roommate's cat and knew that feline socialization would be a big game changer for my life. During that semester I started struggling with depression and finding joy in life. Loving these cats drastically improved my mood.”
During the following semester, Draya used her connection and passion for HATS to fuel her journalism assignments. Taking inspiration from their cause for her assignments and turning a multi-media reporting project into a research effort on animal fostering in Mt. Pleasant helped revive her then-shrinking passion for journalism.
In her first week as a HATS intern she has already seen the effort and resilience of its entire staff and gotten an inside look at some of the realities of shelter work. While she knows their work is the real lifesaver, she hopes to help these animals in need in her own way.
